Inspired by the word “Nurturing”.
As the concept for this piece developed, both of my late grandmothers found their way into it. The old rose represents my grandmother Annie who had an old rose bush in her garden which came from my great grandfather's home. A slip from that same rose bush now grows in my parents garden, blooming the prettiest pink roses each year.
The title A Stór is a term of endearment my grandmother Nancy always used. Every time I hear it, it brings back the memory of her sitting in her chair by the range, elbows perched on her knees, twiddling with the rosary beads in her hands.
The woman's long plaits are held in place by a solid metal band, marked with the Celtic Motherhood Knot which she also wears as a ring on her finger, symbolising Eternal Love and Protection.
